Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) is reported to be effective against common ailments such as cough, cold, asthma, ulcers. It is also reported for use in the treatment for arthritis, heart disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, cancer, eye disorders, Alzheimer’s disease. Each part of Tulsi plant has bioactive constituents which show different pharmacological activities in different extracts. The several extracts such as aqueous, ethanolic, benzene are reported to show certain pharmacological activities for e.g. benzene extract of Tulsi leaves shows anti fertility effect, alcoholic extract of Tulsi leaves shows radio protectivity. The fixed oil from seeds of Tulsi plant shows anti pyretic activity. Literature reports animal models for anti-arthritic, anti-pyretic, neurocognitive, anti-asthmatic, hepatoprotectivity, anti-fertility activity and these are compiled in this review article along with the marketed formulations available in Indian market.
